Cinnamon Basil Cookies

2 c. flour |
¾ c. sugar |

½ tsp. baking soda |
1 egg |

½ tsp cinnamon |
¼ c. chopped fresh cinnamon basil |

¼ tsp. salt |
½ c. finely chopped walnuts |

¾ c. butter at room temperature |
Topping: 3 T sugar, 2 tsp. cinnamon |
Sift together the flour, baking soda, ½ tsp. cinnamon, and salt. Set aside. In a bowl cream the butter with ¾ c. sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, mixing until combined. Stir in cinnamon, basil, dry ingredients, and nuts, blending thoroughly. Wrap and chill the dough for 1 hr. or until firm. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Shape the dough into 1-inch balls. Combine remaining 3 T. sugar and 2 tsp. cinnamon. Roll the balls of dough in this mixture until coated. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Press cookies down with the palm of hand to flatten them slightly. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden. Transfer to racks to cool. Makes about 5 doz.
